About Capstone, Medway, Kent

Living in Capstone, Medway is fantastic. The village itself has what you need for your day to day needs, not to mention the best fish and chips across England! It’s surrounded by the most beautiful countryside, with walks right on our doorstep.
Medway is so centrally located within Kent that it also makes travelling to London a breeze. Everyone at school tells me how ‘lucky’ we are to live here. They have never been, but I’m sure they’ll come and visit soon!

Capstone, Medway is a small town in the southwest corner of Maine.
It’s been home to many generations who have left their mark on the community. Today, it’s a popular vacation spot for people from all over New England and beyond. But Capstone has changed a lot since its founding by James Brown in 1797.
The White Mountains and Mount Washington to the east; Great Bay Estuary and Scarborough Marsh National Wildlife Refuge to the south; Penobscot River to the west; Eastern Promenade State Park on three sides of town with beautiful beaches steps away from downtown shopping districts. Capstone is also the site of the Shorefast Foundation, dedicated to creating a “stronger, more resilient world through small-scale community projects.”

Capstone is on the banks of the Eastern Promenade State Park and overlooks Penobscot Bay. There are public beaches on three sides of town, with some offering lifeguards during the summer months. The city is also home to the Shorefast Foundation, which “promotes community-based projects that build local capacity and increase environmental resiliency in small coastal communities.” Medway has a little more than 2000 people living there today.

The area now Capstone was first settled by two men named Benjamin Tinkham and Samuel Arnold in the 1740s. After many years of land dispute, they reached an agreement in 1753, with both men receiving thirty-six acres.

James Brown incorporated the town on September 22, 1797. The original name for Capstone was “East Medway” or “New Boston,” but Brown decided to rename the city after its location on the cape, or headland now known as Capstone Head.

Brown had acquired all of Medway by 1800. It was said that he “possessed ‘a very handsome estate’ and was well-to-do.” On June 14, 1804, the same day that Maine became a state, Brown divided his entire estate into 44 shares and gave each of his four children a share.

The population in the mid-1800s was between 180 and 200 people. There were about 150 cows and 70 horses at this time as well. The town did not have any public schools until 1828, but parents did send their children to a local “‘dame school.'”
In 1828 the town of Medway formed a committee “to hire a female teacher, and get her instructions in reading, writing, and arithmetic.” In 1880, the first public school opened with one male and two female teachers under contract to teach grades 1 through 8. This school building is now the Town Office Building.

There are many grocery stores in Capstone, Maine. One of the most popular grocery stores is called Shaw’s. Shaw’s has excellent prices, and things like milk and eggs are often on sale. Another popular grocery store is Hannaford’s. It has many positive reviews for its produce and service. Hannaford’s also participates in community events like “Kids Day at the Market,” which is always a lot of fun to take kids to!

Capstone does not have an abundance of restaurants, but there are some that locals enjoy going to. For Mexican food, El Taco Loco is one of the most popular places in town. El Taco Loco offers delicious food with a great atmosphere. You can also get a margarita while you eat! Another favorite restaurant is Gilley’s Lobster & Steak House, located on the Eastern Promenade waterfront. Gilley’s serves delicious seafood and steaks that are to die for!

Capstone doesn’t have much in terms of entertainment. There is a skate park that locals enjoy visiting. It is right next to Shaw’s grocery store, and there are often plenty of skaters there after school or during weekends.
