Halstow is a village in the Sittingbourne District of Kent, England. The parish church is dedicated to St Mary and All Saints.
It has been listed as a Grade I historical building since 1966.
Halstow was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) when Earl Harold owned it, later King Harold II of England, who died at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. After his death, Halstow became part of the Earldom of Warenne until 1243 when it was transferred to Edward de Courcy by Henry III after de Courcy had taken control over Ireland from Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Hertford on behalf of Henry’s son Prince Edward (later King Edward I).
De Courcy had become the largest landowner in Kent at this time. His descendants remained Lords of the Manor until Henry de Cobham, 3rd Lord Cobham, died without a male heir in 1408.
Halstow was one of the three original manors owned by de Courcy. Halstow still exists as a civil parish within the Hundred of Teynham, even though it is now associated with Sittingbourne rather than its original location, river head.
Halstow was once a seaport on the Swale estuary but silting forced trade to move to Faversham, and so the village declined both in population and status.
Today Halstow is a village and civil parish in the Swale district situated on the North Kent Marshes. The marshes were once salt marsh but have now been reclaimed with some difficulty from the sea.
Pockets of five other parishes, Milton Regis, Eastchurch, Sheppey-Isle of Harty, High Halstow, and Leysdown-on-Sea, were also reclaimed from the marshes in the process of draining and producing agricultural land.
Halstow has two public houses: The Queen’s Head (The ‘Queens’) and The Ship Inn, a village shop with a post office, a community center that contains a GP surgery, a community library, a Church of England primary school, and is home to the Halstow Football Club.
Halstow Creek is one of the most critical sites in Europe for overwintering wildfowl. The creek also contains two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) called Lower Swale & Halstow Marshes and Leysdown Marshes.
As a result of the critical birdlife, the marshes are a popular location for wildfowling and birdwatching.
Halstow Marshes is designated as a Ramsar site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. There is no public access to either SSSI as they are part of the private Halstow Estate.
The main road running through the village is The Street which starts on the A2 towards Sittingbourne and on to Sheppey, at the edge of Leysdown-on-Sea roundabout but becomes Luddesdown Road once it reaches Eastchurch. It was formerly part of the A249 until the Sittingbourne Northern Relief Road was opened in January 2006. It leads towards the coast at Leysdown-on-Sea via two routes through the village, passing The Queen’s Head public house, partway down The Street.
